Fundamental aspects of carborane based photochemistry as well as its applicability for photonic materials will be discussed. In particular, charge localization at the carbon-carbon bond in o- carborane plays a pivotal role in bringing up new types of photochemical processes when photo-functional groups are incorporated into the cage carbon atoms.
